Default Installing an AutoMeter Tach

Hi, I have a 1969 Fastback and am looking to install an autometer 5in tach with shift light. I am trying to find the best location to mount it, as I do not want to put it on the steering column. I was wondering since my car does not have A/C is there enough room to mount it in the dash pad where the A/C vents would normally go? (Car is in the Shop and I can't measure the front and don't know what, if anything is directly behind it)

Can someone give me some tips? If the dash pad idea doesn't work where else can I put it?

mine is on my column, but as you said, you dont want it there. you could put it on the A pillar, but the shift light is pretty bright without a cover.

I wouldn't go cutting your dash up to install a tach. Is their room between the bottom of the dash and the transmission hump forward of the shifter?
