Default tire recommendations

I am currently running nitto 555r 245 45 17s on my 66.
I need better traction. It is a street car solely.
Is there a better tire I can use to hook up.

Been very happy with my Falkens. Never driven a nitto, so can't compare it.

I'm not running drag radials. Just a fairly soft tire. I'm okay with drag radials but are they okay for freeway driving?

If you're running 555Rs out back (and not just 555s) they actually are a medium tread life (albeit not "all out") drag radial.

A "true" (for lack of a better phrase) drag radial (Mickey Thompson ET Street, etc.) might not be something you want to daily drive on if wet roads/rain are anything more than a rare occurrence where you live (they can be a bit scary in wet freeway conditions, plus they won't last at all tread-wise if the 'stang is your daily).

How wide are your rear rims, and what size 555r are you currently running out back?

There's a limit to how much traction you can have from a practical standpoint. 3 or 4 link suspensions really help with forward bite, but on a street tire with a lot of power, there's only so much you can do. One of the reasons new performance cars have traction control systems.

Keep in mind that a softer tire that provides better traction in warm weather, tends to perform more poorly in cold weather, and rain (when the roads get cold). A lot of the summer tires with good traction, suck dick once the temps get under 50*. Road condition has a lot to do with it as well, most roads have mediocre condition which will limit traction.

I'm in AZ where I rarely see temps below 50*. I have 17x8 wheels and the widest tire I can run is 245. I have Cal tracs but man i can't hook up. My problem is not off the line , it's once I'm rolling. If i get on it hard in 2nd and 3rd i end up 2 lanes over and sideways

Are you sure the suspension and Caltracs are adjusted right? Pinion angle is correct? Tires you have aren't toast? No suspension bind or bad shocks?

That sounds like something is off.

You can put a 275/40/17 drag radial on depending on your wheel offset. I used them for a few years and when i took them off they still had tread left. But i have buddies that usem on daily drivers and get about 15-20K miles out of them.
