My son and I rewired a 1966 COUPE, (has 289 cid engine) from bumper to bumper. I highly recommend the OEM Mustang harnesses from Alloy Metal Products, 315-676-2405. They make faithful reproductions of the OEM harnesses. It was really plug-n-play and we had no issues. Give them a call if you want more information.

 

I see that you are looking into purchasing a new wiring harness. I work at Ron Francis Wiring and we have been making harnesses for cars for over 40 years. We have several panels that would work well for this application and we tailor every kit to your vehicle by providing you with the plugs for you alternator, distributor and steering column.
Our system is not a prewired system, which works very well in providing that clean look that so many enthusiasts are striving for. You can cut down all of the wires to the exact length you will need. Our wires are also color coded and labeled every 5 inches, so you will always know where a wire is leading.

I did quite a bit of new pieces on the restomod including vintage serpentine/AC, stereo, interior lights, sub-woofer, power windows, power locks, electric fuel pump.......... I used Ron Francis and didn't have any issues, although I did have to call a few times and email with questions since this was my first project. They were always quick to respond and I have not had issues. I did clamp and shrink wrap every connection very carefully and laid everything out with a mock up before actual "cutting". I would say the grounding kit was one of the best investments I have ever made :-)

You may have already done your wiring job, but if not, I agree with the suggestions to go OEM for everything EXCEPT the fuse block. That old-style block with the glass fuses is best tossed out for the newer and better blade-type. I went to West Marine and bought a fuse block for boats. That's right..a MARINE fuse block. It has plenty of space to add additional circuits AND it's waterproof and has a plastic cover. Bolted it right in place where the original block was. Very easy.

 

I used AAW on my 66. The directions on cj pony were excellent. Also addresses the 3 wire heater issues. I upgrades all my gauges as part of this. Was a little overwhelming at first when you see all the wires. But with the directions on cj, the diagram that comes with it - was a lot easier than I thought. I've got a 67 project that I plan using the same kit.

Im sure the OEM kit would be easier but I liked the idea of gong 1 wire alternator, blades fuses, halogen relays, and upgrading my gauges.

 

If you haven't yet purchased one ill toss out the Ron Francis set ups as well knowing you'll be 100% satisfied with it. I looked at everything when we did our car and after looking at them all I ordered from Ron Francis. You will not find any wiring harness on the market better then this one. Support is also great if you need to email or call with a question. Highly suggest giving them a call if you're still debating.
