1965 Steering box replacement questions
Yesterday I removed my long shaft steering box from my 1965 Mustang. It was difficult for me to remove. After trying every conceivable way to bring it out as a unit, I finally took the box apart in the car and removed the box and shaft separately. The suspension and motor mount blocked the way. Now I am looking at putting a new unit in. I see three options:
Get a rebuilt manual steering box for around $300
Get a new Flaming River unit for around $600
Get the Borgensen PS conversion for around $1100
If I go with one of the first two options I am not sure how the heck it can be physically put in the car. Does anyone have some advice on how to get this thing in?
I believe the PS kit has a two piece shaft that would make installing the box and shaft easier. Is this true?
I am going to buy something in the next 24 hours and would like any advice/suggestions you guys might have. I am not a mechanic but can usually figure things out.

I was able to get the box out as one piece by removing the DS side motor mount and jacking the engine up with a 2x4 and floor jack along the oil pan gasket where mounts to the block.
I then replaced it with the flaming river manual steer box and ran that for like 10 years or something.
When I pulled the flaming river box out I noticed that shaft was actually 2 piece. It mounts to the box via splines and a rolled pin. I simply drove the rolled pin out and separated the shaft from the splines.
In your case if you go with the FR box you can simply remove the roll pin, slide the shaft off then get it mounted and reinstall shaft..The shaft slid off the splines with very litter effort.
The FR box is fine for use in manual steer but developed slop in a year or so after daily driving after 10 years it was as bad or worse than the factory box. I replaced it with TCP rack and pinion...which is killer but not cheap.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like if I go back to manual steering I might as well get a re manufactured unit for 160 shipped (plus core deposit) from Rock Auto. The best-priced Flaming River box I have found is 570 from Speedway. I don't drive the car near as much as you do, but when I drive it I want it to be safe and fun.
