True story;
Back in the mid-80's I was stationed at Ft. Hood and in my spare time I loved scouring the area boneyards just to see what was there, how it was put together and anything else I could learn about cars of the era. It was an absolutely target rich environment full of 60's & early 70's cars of every stripe. I wound up buying a 68 Firebird off of one of the owners and we became fast friends.
One day we pull a '68 GTO out of the weeds and start putting it back together for him to sell. I guess word got out because one Saturday while we were working on the car a couple of suits showed up flashing Texas State badges and they were investigating a stolen car ring and heard that they we were taking apart a GTO and they were asked if they could check and see if it was stolen. My buddy showed him the title but they still weren't totally convinced and said they needed to check the VIN's and told us that we would have to leave the shop while they did it.
Leave the shop? Yep. Because they didn't want us to see where they were checking. So they pulled down the bay door and we cooled our jets in the office with one of the officers for about 5 minutes. The officer came in and said that everything was good to go and thanked us for our cooperation.
I never knew about the hidden VINs.

On most Ford Mustangs, besides the VIN tag/data tag and the stamped numbers on the front aprons, Ford also placed VIN stampings under the windshield (visible through the glass), on the frame or left front frame rail in the engine bay, sometimes on suspension or shock tower areas depending on the year, and in some cases partial VINs in hidden locations like the cowl or inner body panels after question how to get a copy of vehicle window sticker with advice here https://carfast.express/en/window_sticker ; all of these should match the title and each other, and if you’re unsure of the exact spots for your model year, a factory service manual or knowledgeable Mustang shop can point them out quickly.
