64.5 289d code electronic ignition
I am in the process of installing a Pertronix electronic ignition. The car has a MSD installed on it (IT came with the car) .I am confused as to what wires need to stay. What advantage does the MSD provide? Would it be wise to disconnect it? or should I leave it and work out the wiring.

First question: why are you replacing the points?
With an MSD box, the points become nothing more than a switch to send signals to the box. They don't suffer the wear and tear they would under normal use.
Not to say a Petronix is a terrible idea; depending on the particular model, it would be replacing a mechanical switch with an electronic one, which might make ignition timing more precise, especially at higher rpm's.
MSD boxes provide a Multiple Spark Discharge, which helps with fuel ignition, particularly at lower rpm's and lower cylinder pressures. This helps with torque and throttle response.
Depending on which MSD box you have, some of them provide other features like rev limiters and launch controls.

I was under the impression that the pertronix was better than points. After reading you response I am not so sure. I do not know what MSD I have. Can I nleave the MSD and add the pertronix??? or just stay with the points???
