Default Harmonic Balancer selection, 65 289ci

Hey there Mustang family, I believe this is my first post. Bought a 65 Mustang years ago and have finally begun to work on it. Long story short, bought it from a woman going through a divorce, the husband threw away all paperwork for the car and is zero help on what has been done to the car. Fresh motor and trans, C4. Hell of a vibration in the motor, looks like the harmonic balancer is the only part of the engine that hasn’t been changed out recently. How do you select a balancer weight if you have no idea what has been done to the internals??? I’m assuming there is a 28oz on it currently but it’s either incorrect or has deteriorated. Help please!

Also, peevious owner does good work on cars, I’d imagine he may have had the motor balanced when rebuilding it. So would that be a zero ounce balancer?

It's probably the flywheel that is incorrect if new.

check to see that is running on all 8.

Use an Ir heat gun on the headers
check plug color
check compression

Then move onto the imbalance as it seems you dont have a reason to suspect imbalance any more than you would a misfire...but im not there to see it. But I still think its good advice

I believe it is hitting on all 8, I haven't tried the infrared heat gun but I have checked compression and changed plugs. Also upgraded ignition from points to Petronix and it runs the exact same, just starts better. Vibration is worst at around 2800 rpm. I'll try the heat gun thank you!

could the firing order be wrong? Perhaps it has a cam that uses a 351 firing order and not the 289...You could try the opposite of what you have now and just see if it starts at all and if it runs better or worse.
