Default 1966 Rear Console Wiring

Hello everyone. Not sure if I’m doing this correctly, so I just needed a little info. I’m attempting to replace the 2 bulbs in the rear console light of my 66’. I removed the 2 bulbs, and the light bulb inserts were rusty. I put 2 new bulbs in, and the lights do not come on when the door opens.

I used a voltmeter on the 20DC setting and put the red in one of the double socket wires right before the light assembly, and the black in the ground socket. I opened the door, and the voltmeter read 0.00.

Is this the right setting to test voltage? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Just wondering if it’s a writing issue, or if I need to replace the light assembly.

Are they suppose to come on when you open the door? Do they turn on when you turn the interior lights on?

From what I’ve researched, they activate when the interior lights do. They aren’t activating at all, and my miltimeter read 0 when I opened the door.

So they don't come on at all even when you turn on the interior lights manually then. Huh. Sounds to me like they are not connected at all so it's time to start chasing the spark, or lack there of back to the source and find out where the wheels are falling off.

Multimeters are great but a el-cheapo 12V test light is a lot easier for go/no-go situations like this. They are invaluable when working on these old cars and well worth the $5.00 investment.
