Default Power steering

My wife just purchased a 73 grande with no power steering. It is has the 250 inline 6 3 speed. Her mechanic says the only way to add power steering is an electric power steering system. This seems odd, parts are available when I search make and models, I see nothing about an electric system. Will the steering box need replaced or can we just add a pump to it? Is there a better way?

New to the site, thanks in advance

CJ has a kit for what you are wanting to do. Borgeson 800128 Mustang Power Steering Conversion Gearbox With 14:1 Ratio 1971-1973 (cjponyparts.com).

I read the reviews and removed my suggestion that this might work for you.
