Default Newbie - What engine is in my 69?

Trying to ID this engine on my 69 mustang.

Wife and I inherited same about 2 years ago - it had been sitting for about 10 years.

I got it running last year and was fine, it was overheating a bit. The last time it overheated it quit on me and had to get it towed. I tried starting the next day but got a terrible metal on metal sound when it tries to turn over.

I think it might be the starter, but for now I just want to know what engine it is now that I have time to troubleshoot it. I'm pretty new to mustangs and looking for some help, if anyone in the DFW area and could help please reach out.

Thanks in advance.

See link below for some pictures of the engine.

302 or 351 Windsor, can't tell from the photos. Go to your door tag and plug the numbers directly into the 1966 to 1969 decoder on this link. Ford Mustang Data Plate Decoder (cjponyparts.com)

Ford discontinued the 289 early in the 1968 model year.

As Mostang66 said, the door tag is the first thing to check. The problem is the engine may have been swapped and since your car has aftermarket rocker covers and intake it is a good indicator things are not original. A good photo of the area on the front of the block under the distributer will help, the 302 has aa lower deck height than the 351W.

BTW: you appear to be missing a vacuum line to the distributor and this will have a significant effect on drive ability..

The surest way to know what you have is to pull the starter motor and check the code cast into the block in the area above where the starter sits.
