ok now dont laugh but i test drove my maybe soon to be 66 mustang but its auto.
when i test drove her it was missing 2 letters on the gearselector it has P R N L.
with that said what r the 2 missing ones the guy told me that the fist missing on is 2nd and the middle missing one is D so then i test drove it in 2nd[:@]
but any one who has a original or did have a original auto tranny what is the order that the gears are in?

No, they are not all the same. Early C-4’s like the picture in Soaring post had a “Small White Dot†and a “Green Dot†instead of letters. The White Dot next to the Neutral position starts in second gear and goes to third. The Green Dot starts off in first and goes through the gears normally.

The thoughts behind it starting in second rather than first were based upon low traction situations such as snow and ice. Starting off in 2nd reduced torque mulitplication and made it easier to move the car without spinning the tires. It was refered to as Select Shift. in 67 they used PRND21, at least that is how it is in my Cougar. Later the AOD trans had P R N OD D L 2nd gear wasnt available in a manual mode any more. But you can make it available with valvebody mods so 4th is applied by a solenoid ather than the manual valve.
