blowing out voltage regulator
Hey all,
Last year I had the entire wring system replaced, when I had my engine rebuilt and engine compartment detailed.
A few months ago, my voltage regulator (autolite vintage from NPD) crapped out. I took the money and at the time replaced the standard alternator
with a 120 amp chrome version from npd, and got a 120 amp solid state voltage regulator (NAPA VR440) to replace the original. I had hoped that, I would clear up this little gremlin with that purchase, I have since replaced the voltage regulator once, and yesterday the voltage regulator blew again.
As all the wiring and switches were replaced except a) the two speed wiper switch and b) the heater switch, I was wondering what might be causing the voltage regulatir to blow out.
As with all electrical gremlins, this is a real problem when the car shuts down in the middle of nowhere.
Any thoughts would be helpful. Especially since almost everything was professionally replaced.
thanks

your heater switch is the culprit unfortunatly. I had the same problem with mine. What seems to happen is when you turn the heater on, it draws so much power from the blower that it dumps the overload into the regulator. You might just try puttin a new switch in it unfortunatly, however, at the same time i havent had great luck with the oem regualtors from NPD, i had to track down a NOS unit, which i had to shell out 85 bucks for, but never had the problem again.
Thanks. I shall now purchase a new heater switch.
X-mas is around the corner... maybe I can convince santa that I deserve another gift.
cheers,
I will let the list know how it goes.
