Your engine feels powerful, so you've ruled out that it's a 289? Got news for you friend - there are plenty of 289s that will plaster you to the seat back! What are you comparing it to that leads you to such a conclusion?

I see where you're going with that, and that was my original thought. But if someone bothered to put a 4-speed in it, it's likely a different engine. And 289's really aren't all that common to build up. Not that I'm ruling the 289 out, but it's probably pretty likely it's a 302 of some sort.

But we can guess at it all day. Lets take a look at a picture and go from there.

dangit get some pics, lol. its probably a small block still but its possible to be a big block. my parts car came with a 302 when built but it was later swaped to a 351W, woot!. Some pics would help but not make it obvious. it of course could be a 289 HiPo, or just a modded 289 like said. if anything other than 289 im guessing 302 or 351W. Get us pics and we can all compare to our cars and tell you what the best guess is.

What year is the car? If it's a 66 or older, a 390 (or any FE) won't fit unless the shock towers are removed.

Actually.....swapping in a 4 speed was and still is quite common without doing anything else because of better off-the line performance.

I will don my karnack hat for a moment and predict

Wide ratio toploader
3.25 or 3.55 trak lok
289 with a performer intake, cam, and hipo manifolds.

Additionally.....building up a 289...is exactly building up a 302...since they are the same block...and essentially the same motor aside from a small stroke difference (or something like that)

Ohh boy I can't wait to see a pic.
