definately doesn't look like a 289 or 302.
count how many bolts hold down the valve covers, small block has 6, big block is something else.

good luck

Yes, the valve covers are those two long chrome pieces on each side of the top of the engine. Count the bolts that hold one of the valve covers down then get back to us.

ORIGINAL: samer

maybe u r right but there is any way to find out the size of this engine
cs someguys told me that he is 390 and other said that he is a thunderbird engine
i don't know and this is my first mustang and i'm restoring it and i don't know a lot about them
so i asked 4 help
The 390's came with the '67 GT 390. The Engine number location is under the coil attachment bolt if it is a 390.

Just found the pictures. That is definately an "FE" big block. Most likely a 390 but it could be just about any displacement in the FE engine family. Have fun, they are torque monsters. Quick question, you mentioned that the VIN indicated that the car came with a 289. Did you take the VIN from the door data plate or the actual registration documents?

Dang he beat me to it. Yeah, Thats an FE engine. You can tell by looking at the water pump. It doesn't mount like a small block does.
