Default wiring harness help

hi guys,
the wiring harness in my coupe does not look very good a this point. most of the wires are rotting and there are quite a few loose ends. should i just trash it all and wire everything seperately as i put it back together? all i need are the bare essentials in this car.
would it be worth the $600 to buy a kit when all i really need include: brake lights, headlights, window defroster (not entirely necessary, its a summer car that wont even see rain).

the fuel pump, radio, guages and MSD ignition will need all its own wiring anyways.

what am i forgetting that could be difficult for me to figure out once the car is done? feel free to give me any info on the electrical systems of a car. ive got no clue when it comes to electrical stuff.

thanks for your help,
carl

i had to do an *** load of wiring on my car, i dont know how bad yers is but i made mine work, i would spend that 600 bux else where, if its not shorting out er nething and you can hide it, who cares what it looks like. unless of course what it looks like dramatically effects the functionality of it and you begin to have problems. but if yer not havin problems then why worry?

It really all depends. Since you readily admit you know virtually nothing about wiring, my suggestion is that you contact Painless and ask them which kit you will need for your application. What you don't want to do is patch together a bunch of wires just to make it work. That is, unless you have fire insurance.

well i can wire radios and speakers and such, so i would know what would be safe and whats not. i also have the help of my father and a couple friends (they pretty much know what they are doing). i will probably dissect whats on the car now and draw out diagrams for each component's wiring. that way it should be fairly easy with my dad's help. in any case all of the wiring would be soldered and i would use the plastic things that you heat to seal the connections. ive narrowed down what i need to heat, lights, and windsheild wipers. its already going to be a stripped down drag race car, so the regular comfort stuff wont be necessary.

also, i would be using all new wiring, connectors etc. not just patching up the old stuff.

thanks very much guys,
carl

Ok, using heat shrink and solder will definitely be a better route than duct tape. It sounds like you know what you are doing, and don't need any conventional wiring for your application.

i know, painless has an entire kit for these old mustangs, its like 600USD er somethin, bu ti dont think anyone would be disappointed, remember when you are wiring though to do a full 360 degree wiring job, dont assume the body will ground everthing, if it needs a ground, make one for it. Youll save yourself alot of headaches down the road.
