fuel problem- no start
Hello-
I have a 66 that basically sits most of the time. I start it once a month or so to keep things going until I can restore it. Went to start it this past weekend, and it would not start unless I poured some gas into the carb. Started right up, but would not stay running. It is parked on a very slight incline front to back. New fuel pump about 6 months ago. Has run fine since the pump until now. Added a couple more gallons of gas, but didn't help.
Has to be a fuel delivery problem in my estimation. Any thoughts?

Floats could be jammed shut but i doubt it.
Remove the fuel line from the carb, have someone crank the engine and see if you get fuel from the line.
Start there

if it is on enough of an incline it could be keepin the fuel from gettin to the pickup in the tank. try movin it onto the street and try startin it, good call on the fuel filter though
I wouldnt be surrprised if the floats were stuck. I've got an old ford truck and it was running fine and i let it sit about a month and it wouldnt start for anything. Turns out the floats were stuck. take a little hamme or screwdriver and tab on the side of the carb
Good suggestions on all fronts. I disconnected the fuel line before the filter, and sure enough, no fuel coming out when cranking. As I said, fuel pump is basically new, and I ran the car after it was installed so that shouldn't be the problem. So that rules out the pump and the filter. Also put 5 gallons of gas in it before I checked the line.
I have a new sending unit on the way anyway because my guage hasn't been accurate for years. Empty for me is like 1/4 tank on the guage. It still registers, though, because it went to 1/2 after I put the 5 gal in.
So, somebody said the sending unit could be causing the problem, but I thought that just registered the amount of fuel in the tank.????

Yeah i believe it's the same for mustangs too. Key word SENDING lol.
Heres a picture, You can see the fuel level float/reader. and can also see the fuel pickup.
Well, i tried to put a link up to a picture, but it's not working. If you go to mustangs unlimited, and do a search for FUEL SENDING, you will see a picture of what i am talking about.

OK, so I replaced the sending unit today, and on top of the fact that I can't get it to stop leaking, I still have no fuel to the carb. Guess at this point it almost has to be the fuel pump, even though it's only like 6 mo. old.
Apparently, it's not easy to get that dang sending unit gasket in the right place with the tank still in the car....
