Default Speedometer Cable

I have '66 289 with a leaking speedometer cable and I have been told that removing it should be just a simple matter of removing the clip and twisting it out. I tried taking it off like that, but it seems to twist freely in either direction. It is now my understanding that it may just pull out. I did pull a little when I was trying to take it out, but I didn't want to risk breaking it since it was still working and the leak wasn't too bad. This is really frustrating since it should be a no-brainer. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Yeah, it's a no-brainer. Unscrew the bolt at the top, and simply pull it out.

Unbolt it, 7/16 size. Grasp it by the short metal piece at the end and pull it straight out. There is an O-ring in there that can be replaced and that should stop your leak.

I have seen them leak where the cable goes into the metal piece also. That only happens when the cable gets oil soaked. When they are like that if you pull on the black cable itself you risk pulling the black cable out of the metal piece. It should be no problem though.

i think i burned mine. The bracket got bent, and it was touching my newly installed h-pipe. I think it's leaking alittle grease out of it.

Thanks for the help. I must have won the speedometer cable lottery, because I had to use a pair of vice grips, a pry bar and a lot of force to get it out. Other than that it was smooth sailing.
