Default RE: posi traction

I have an acquittance that has 3 classic mustangs and 1 he bought originally himself in 66 so through the years of him messing around with mustangs he has acquired many parts and I am going over to his house tomorrow to talk to him about some stuff and I would like to see if he has a posi traction system laying around some where that I could buy off of him to put in to my car.... Now the reason I am doing this is that the barrings in my axle are starting to go out and when I put gear oil in my axle I don't watch it seep out I watch it drip out... so I need to replace the gasket or whatever that is and I was going to try and get something other than a open rear end while its all apart so that I wont have to take it apart again for awhile so that is why I want to know "how much should I expect to pay for a used posi system" I would love to get a locker rear end but I don't have some 300 dollars to spend on something like that right now.... I know that to some of you it might not seem like allot but since I only have a part time job its hard for me to get the money I need but other than "just the rear end system" I have around 400 dollars worth of work that I NEED to get done to my car by the end of April. so that is why I am sticking to a used posi and nothing fancy.... and if I cant get one from the guy I know then ill probably just go without until I have enough to get a good system.

So, ill say this one last time...How much should I expect to pay for a used posi system? (I'm sorry if I come off sounding upset, I am just starting to get a little tired of being given the run around and not a straight answer for my question)

I do appreciate the help you are trying to give me though.

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but as you can see that posi type devices (not gears or the rest of the 3rd member) cost $250 on up. So purchasing a whole 3rd member with gears and a posi used would most likely be more than $300. My guess. If you find one that cheap I would guess that the posi is of suspect condition, the clutches wear out in LSD types.

I too am looking for Locking or LSD solution. A lot of people seem to be.

As I understand it, touching the ring and pinion (removal or assembly) requires special knowledge and shims, checking the angle of the mesh etc.

The question I need answered is if you can add a Locker/T-Loc etc to a 3rd member without messing around with the Gear Setup. If you can do that then this would be a less expensive way to get a "Posi"

That would be great for people with the correct gear ratio that just want to take traction to the next level.

The first one is what I did along with 3:55 grears and a total rebuild of all the bearings. Works great and it will handle 400hp as long as you get the optional hardened cross pins (which I did). Go for it..

OK there are two ways you can go cheap and expensive... they both do the same thing and to tell you the truth i don't know the difference.... so remember you get what you pay for....

I wanted to do the same thing you did, not spend too much. You may find a cheep posi unit on ebay or something for someplace between $450 - $500..

Those are nice and I say the fallowing with out trying to offend you but..... that doesnt answer my original question..... how much should I expect to pay for a used posi traction system (I know someone who might have one and if he does I want to try and get it off of him at a fair price for both of us)?

Answer to your question, yes getting a "locker" from Richmond would install easy. If you're going to just install the locker and use the saem gears, its EASY......... Just did a complete rebuild on my rear, ALL the bearings, seals, two new spider gears, new Richmond 3:55's and a Richmond locker. Total cost was about $700.... But, if you're going to just install the Richmond locker, you're looking at $200 plus some seals.

alright awesome...200 is well worth the REAL burnouts...not the one wheel stuff......hopefully this car will just come with friggin posi already when i go to buy it tomorrow.....extremely unlikely....but its okay to dream i guess lol.

is the "clicking" sound a locker makes loud around corners to the point where people will be like "what the ****?"

what can the sound be compared to...ive never heard it before so i really just dont know what i should expect....
