4spd Top Loader info
For anyone wanting info on 4spd manuals, get the March issue of Mustang Monthly - an excellent article in there covering all the 4spd manuals... I learned by reading it what Top Loader I have in my '65 Fastback. When I bought the car 13 years ago, it had the Top Loader in it (not original) and I always wondered. As the article decribes, there are two Top Loaders common - a close ratio and a wide ratio. To tell for sure what you have, count the teeth on the second gear - 28 and you have a close ratio, 31 and you have a wide ratio. Today I checked mine since the tranny is out awaiting my new 289 short block - Yea, it's a close ratio!

What kind of boot are you running on that shifter? Does it have a square hole in the top for the shifter to come through? Been looking for one for my 67 w/T5 and a hurst shifter
do all original small block ford toploaders just bolt right up? i have a 302 auto and wanna switch to manual....is that an easier way to go than T5...not factoring in the rebuilding cost or anything just like sheer ease of transfer.....?
do you still have to shorten the drive shaft or does the C4 auto driveshaft and stuff work with the toploader??

I am using a stock shifter boot. The rubber boot conforms to the rectangular shape of the Hurst with no problems. Looks just fine I think.

Well, no matter what manual you go to you will need a bellhousing and flywheel/clutch assembly and clutch linkage. Numerous Top Loaders made in a variety of lengths (early Mustangs were 24") and either 28 or 31 tooth output shafts. To fully understand the Top Loader, pick up the March issue of Mustangs Monthly magazine. And for more auto to manual tranny info see: www.moderndriveline.com
