Swapping out the Automatic
Hello all,
I want to swap out my 3 speed automatic in my 67 FB for a manual transmission. There is so
much out there today. I have been reading up on manual trannys like the T-5. I don't know which direction to go in. My objective is to get a better ride on the highway with my 3.55 gears
and not have the engine sound like its about to explode. But do I really want a 5 speed? A lot of shifting just to get to overdrive. Any one have some personal experience to share?

I have a 3 speed manual in my 65, and a 5 speed in my 03 Mach 1. I enjoy driving both cars, but prefer the 5 speed. What I really like, is that in 4th, the car pulls really hard, so passing is a snap, and it lugs down a lot, so at anything over 35 MPH up to 60 or so, I keep it in 4th. So, it's a myth that you are always in the gear box with a 5 speed. Of course, all this depends on the engine and gears in the rear, but at highway speeds, the 355 rear in my Mach in 5th gear runs about 2K RPM. A gas saver for sure. But, when I need the power in 1-4 gears, she is there......
yep, I'm planning for a t-5 but i'm keeping the idea of the Tremec Heavy Duty 5-speed in the mind in case I want something stronger. MY engine isnt really too close to stock anymore with a new cam, roller rockers, 600cfm 4 barrel carb, new intake manifold, flat-top pistons, bored out by .040in, and the HEI ignition. I dunno if its enough to exceed the 330lbs of torque but if i can, i'll dyno it before the engine gets in the car. or i'll dyno it with the old C4 and then put in the manual tranny later...
