Default Burned up Tranny

Got a tranny problem. 98 must gt conv. no mods. 123k miles auto. car running place in drive car sits for a second to a few seconds then goes into a gear. then started slipping at higher speeds. Wife found problem and delayed calling which made for a very unhappy ME! She says i got the engine so the needle is on three and the car bearly moves. I keep smelling something like its burnt. it's really bad if i get above 40. I am thinking to myself WTF why are you trying to go 40 when the car isn't running right.

I pulled tranny pan got out burnt red fluid replace filter andd cleaned magnet the was coverd in finings and sludge, After saying a few choice words i replaced filter, gasket and fluid. when i ran it it started sluggish, got firmer, and then stopped going forward after 3 blocks. Car will only drive in reverse. Anyone know the cost of a new tranny. What would be a good replacement. Should i have one rebuilt. can i do this at home or on my friends lift, I was told I have to do somethin with the compuyer after i replace the bad tranny, if so, what your help would be appreciated

this car has no mods

Scott: Sounds like the facing is gone from the clutches. They do wear out, you know. At 123K you got a good run. As long as no gears are gone, it will be a "soft" rebuild. Doing it on your own with require getting a kit and some special spanner wrenches, etc. The valve body will be a tricky rebuild. There may be servos that need to be repalced too. To test them you need special tools also. I suggest you take it to a reputable shop and get it done. I had mine done for about $1200.00.

Hope this is helpful.
