Default Convertible top mechanism

I have a 97 convertible, but this should apply to any of the sn95 convertibles. My question is, if the convertible top mechanism fails, can the top be manually raisedor lowered in an emergency so that you could at least get the car to the garage for repairs and not have to drive with the top half up?
