My 1967 convertible has an original top that is still in fantastic shape. As in, looks new from the factory shape with all orginal parts and components. It has lived its entire life indoors, only seldomly being exposed to sun and the elements.

My mechanic cautions me against letting it get rained on, and is convinced that if I do, it will shrink and no longer go up all the way without ripping.

He's a great mechanic for mechanical things, but I am wondering about this; the top is supple, looks new, and otherwise shows no evidence of needing replacement.

What I am looking for is for advice on this, including ways to prolong a 47 year old convertible top's life, while getting good solid use of it. I'm tired of owning a garage queen and am looking to drive this car more going forward in life.

Unless you personally have had this car since new, or a close family, I would be very skeptical that it is original.

The real topic though is whether or not you should use it as it was designed to be used. My answer is a resounding "YES!"

Tops have a natural lining on the underside of the vinyl that is made of mostly cotton. So, while the vinyl may look great, if the top is older, likely the black underside has deteriorated and is starting to become powdery.

Just use it like it is meant to be used. Have a new one installed it the old one comes apart. No big deal.

Yep. I have personally owned it since new. No signs of the underside deteriorating, yet.

And I agree with using it as designed. Which is what I am doing, advice to the contrary or no.

 

Drop the top and get some bugs in your teeth. A convertible top is a wear item and a component meant to be replaced.

I wouldn't sweat it.

 

I didn't buy a convertible to ride in the shade.
