Help! (Ink on red leather)
I just noticed a couple of blue ink streaks on my passenger side seat. When I questioned my kids about it they both said it had been there for a month or two. My seats are red leather. What should I do to try to get this out? I will not touch it until you guys let me know what is safe and effective. Thanks in advance.
Try rubbing lightly with cloth with olive oil. Then use leather conditioner.Try on small hidden spot of leather first to be sure it doesn't lighten or discolor the dye.Saw this on a leather sofa manufacturers web site for cleaning stains.
While I have not personally tried some of the below, I did search on autopia.org for a possible solution.
Some of the advise was:
Test in a hidden location to ensure no fading of the dye.[*]isopropyl alcohol (IPA).[*]Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.[*]Hair spray.[*]All purpose cleaner cut 10 or 8 to 1.[*]Woolite.[*]"Top of the Line" reportedly makes a cleaner that is well suited for this.
I have used an all purpose cleaner (10:1)with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to clean leather seats with very good results.
Condition the leather when completed.

Well, several answers so far but I'm suprise rubbing alcohol has not been mentioned!? That is what I used to get rid of a few black sharpie marks on my grey leather. Gets rid of it with very little effort.
Just test it first in an inconsicuous area to be safe, then when done you will want to apply some leather cleaner/conditioner.

Mothers Leather Cleaner is excellent and worth a try (since it's intended for leather).
Whatever you use, and I'd try aerosol hair spray (which can tend to work well on ballpoint as well as gel inks) or Goo Gone, you may need several gentle applications.
If at all possible, test in an inconspicous area first (not all of the surfaces are leather, so it will react differently from vinyl).
Be sure to use a good conditioner, such as Mothers, after you clean -- most cleaners, especially alcohol, can dry out the hide, so nourish it after.

You'll want to try a water based cleaner first. Water based won't damage the topcoat on the leather, so that's the safest bet.
Most likely that will not work, so you'll need an alcohol based cleaner. Sowaxeman was correct with that. There really is no need to use hairspray, etc. Alcohol will dissolve the ink, but just becareful because it could take the topcoat off of the leather. Since red is a darker pigment, it's quite possible. All that would happen is the area would look lighter. Depending where you'll located CCI can help you out www.CreativeColorsIntl.com give em a call and set something up with one of the tech's in your area if you need help.
