Ok so I was looking at a website about restoring paint. It says for a sevearly faded or scratched paint surface a rubbing compound should be used. So whats a good rubbing compound to use. And after I use that I should apply polish then wax right, or just wax.

 

put the rubbing compound down and step away from the car!
rubbing compound is more/less used for older, single staged paints. it's not something you want to be putting on your clear.
it sounds like you need to clay, POLISH and seal.
the only real way to make a difference is with a machine such as the porter cable 7424, ultmate detailing machine, etc. etc.


is your clear faded? do you have any pictures?

 

I dont have any good pictures on my laptop(im at college). But i have some pics from my PI swap and you can see how its faded if you look close. Look at the hood in the one picture you can see where its faded in strips, and the second picture look at the top of the fenders.

 

I would invest in a Porter Cable polisher and some good polishes. I highly recommend the Optimum lineup. I would use the Compound first and then finish off with the Optimum Polish. This combo works great and I use them all of the time. I have a package on my website that has the Porter Cable, pads, backing plate, and these Optimum polishes.

 

I'd like some more details on the quality of the finish or some better photos -- I might be seeing some clearcoat breaching issues and Justin's PC and polishes won't help with that.

 

i agree with SVTbill.. dont even think about getting the compound.. i tried it on my 94 lumina wasnt dumb enough to put it on the stang first.. soon as i got done all i was left with is a big faded circle lol..

Yep- you hit it dead on.

What I see is faded/damaged clear. No polish or polisher will fix that.

 

don't use rubbing compound if your paint is only faded and scratched a little bit....turtle wax rubbing/ polishing compound works good if you're trying to bring your paint back to life
