I wash my wheels (chrome) all the time with microfiber towels ( soaked in car wash/water) and have not experieced any sand paper like scratches on them.

I just dont see how a wet m/f even feels like sand paper OR would even cause scratching like that of sand paper.

People use M/F towels washing their cars with ONR or car wash. Seems like it would be worse on clear coat than it would be on aluminum.

they won't scratch chrome but they will scratch aluminum.

if you don't believe it try it. just be prepared to polish out the scratches in your wheel when you get done.

I did not believe it at first until the guy showed me how bad wet MF will scratch a wheel.

 

Was the wheel dirty or clean??

I dont believe its the m/f (unless its low quality and there are many different brands out there and not everyone uses the same)

p {margin:0px;}just because your friend scratched his wheels, that time with a MF does not mean every single aluminum wheel will get scratched when being rubbed by a damp MF. aluminum, in comparason to clearcoat is very hard. i dry my aluminum wheels all the time with no marring at all. the only way a damp MF can scratch an aluminum wheel is if the wheel is covered in brake dust and/or dirt, and the person rubsthe dirt/dust inwith excessive pressure.

Try it and you will see it leaves very small scratches in the aluminum when you rub a microfiber towel on it with some pressure.

 

of course you're going to scratch aluminum wheels if you rub chrome polish on them, doesn't matter if you're using an MF towel, paper towel, cotton or sand paper. the arguement at had was a "wet" MF towel, not a MF towel soaked in chrome polish.

 

It is not about polishing aluminum with chrome polish. It is about scratching aluminum with microfiber. It just says never polish billet with MF. I never said it would scratch anything other than aluminum nor did I say I just knew a friend that did it. I have done it and know for a fact it will scratch aluminum. I never said all aluminum, harder aluminum it doesn't scratch but soft metals it will.

 

I am not trying to start an argument but instead of thinking its a bunch of BS why dont you take a billet wheel and rub on it with a MF towel and tell me what you see.

 

are you trying to say a MF damp with water will scratch aclean polished alumnium wheel if rubbed on it? because that is not correct. i've rubbed MFs across clean polished aluminum wheels before, and it did not scratch. as a matter of fact it was getting paid to do it, too, because i detail on the weekends.

a clean, damp MF rubbed on a clean aluminum wheel will simply,not scratch it. there has to be some sort of dust/dirt inbwetween the MF and the wheel. clean, well maintaned microfiber towels are safe for clear coat and almost every automotive surface. i recommend a quick detailer between the paint and the surface to prevent scratching. scratching from dirt, not the towel its'self.

 

We are talking apples to oranges here folks. Rubbing a wet mf on uncoated, polished aluminum is much different then rubbing it on a clearcoated paint job. But I also believe if a damp mf is causing fine polishing scratches on polished aluminum, then there is either dirt/dust in the MF or on the wheel itself. Chrome Polish has chemicals in it that are not meant for aluminum, thus why would you try to prove this theory by using it on aluminum? And aluminum polish has abbrasives in it that are not meant for chrome.

This sounds like a whole different subject that I am always happy to voice my opinion on....before you use polishes on your wheels, know what the heck you have because there is a whole ton of difference between chrome and polished aluminum.
