Default Wheel Spacers

I have a 94 GT and someone suggested I put 3/4 - 1" wheel spacers on the rear wheels to bring the wheels flush with the body of the car?

Has anyone done this and is 3/4 - 1" sound about right? I currently have 17*8 rims on it. Thanks.
