Default 1968 Running Great

I've been posting some threads about my 289 RUNNING HOT.. got beyond all that when the machine shop reworked the right head. The stock trans is a 3 spd in the floor and i'm wondering what life would be like with a TREMEC 5 spd and nice shifter installed.

Has anyone ever had any experience with this? Does the TREMEC fit pretty painless or does it require a lot of mods? Would the change make a difference in power/transfer to the rear wheels in a manner that I could notice?

Also around 65 MPH the car stocks vibrating. Could this be balancing of the tires or what else?

thanks,
KLS

That, or you have a bad uni joint getting ready to go. If you go with the T5, you might have to alter the hump for Reverse, I THINK, but it's not a big deal. Nice Coupe!

I think the T5 is a good fit, but a Tremec is larger and may not fill well.

I agree with Daniel..the T-5 or even an old top loader would be a much easier choice. However, unless you change the rear gears, the 3 speed will be running the same RPM's at 65 as either one one of these. Your vibration could be a myriad of things. Either the U-Joints as mentioned, or imbalanced tires, or just worn out bearings etc. Jack it up and shake the crap out of everything to see if you can locate the problem. Grease your front wheel bearings, and grease the zerks all around, to include the U-Joints.

Soaring, I`m sure this is what you meant to say...
It will be the same RPM at 65mph with the C-4 or Toploader, but the RPM will drop with the T-5 since the 5th gear has a 0.63:1 ratio

Vibration source could also be from an unbalanced drive shaft...
