Default taillights

i have a black 92 mustang gt w/ stock black gt taillights that are faded and scratched. i want to get rid of the scratches on the lens, and restore the black plastic so it looks polished and new. Any sugestions on how i should go about doing this? i want to do it right. If i have to re-paint them, i want to get the right kind of paint. What kind of scratch removal product should i use on the tail light lens'? Any advise that you can give me would be greatly appreciated. THANKS
