Salvage cars
Besides them being hard to insure...what does everyone know about salvage vehicles?
I want to start a new project and I noticed alot of salvage car sellers coming around. Now they wouldn't be in business if no one bought the cars....so has anyone done this? I was thinking of getting an 02-04 GT that was in an accident and work on it...eventually tricking out the engine. I saw you can get these for around5-10K depending on milage and damage. Who knows what to look for and what to stay away from?
Thanks!

RE: Salvage cars
I know a little about them because there is one not far from me and a good friend of mine just bought one. His went through a flood. He bought a 2003 Dodge 4x4 loaded for 8500.00. This place did all the work to get the truck ready to sell. They did a heck of a job. We even pulled door panels off and no mud or water stains they were like new. The catch is they come with a R title. For him it was a work truck that he will never get rid of. He will run the wheels off of it. He bought it it had 9,000 miles. Now he has 70,000 and hasn't had much trouble at all, a few nickle dime sensors and thats it. He went to this huge place in Allentown PA M & J recyclables or something like that. All I can tell you is really look the car over. Take the time like we did and pull some parts off and look and get as much history as you can get. You are taking a risk for sure, but for what you buy them for, you can put a few grand in it and still be ahead.

RE: Salvage cars
Your best bet is to check your state DMV or State Police website to see how they handle a salvage title car every state is different. When you go to your state sites type in salvage title in the search and your bound to find something. Here is what I know about it here in Michigan. When you buy a salvage title car you can not get it licenced until you take it to a State Police Post and have it inspected and you must have proof off all repairs that where done and if they approve you will only get a Repaired Title. If it is a vehicle you plan on keeping the vehicle buy it but if you are looking at selling at a profit good luck Repaired title cars are hard to sell.

RE: Salvage cars
I believe it is the same here. You have to show proof of work done, and they inspect it to make sure everything is good. It shows up on the title though, so if you were to sell it you have to disclose that the car has been salvaged, and you will probably not make any money off of it. So don't try to flip it or anything, make sure it is one you will drive. And make sure you do investigating yourself before buying it. Usually the frame is bent or had some work done to it that might be a headache.
