when I went from 2.73's to 3.73's in my 88 with an aod, it only added about 300 rpm to 4th gear, i.e. at 70 mph crusing speed the tach went from 2,000 to 2,300 rpm and I didn't hardly notice any change in gas mileage, it may have actually gotten better as the 3.73's get you up to crusing speed sooner! I highly recommend you try some, you'll like 'em!

gears will run you around $190 and installation around $200-$250. gears work like this-the higher the number, the lower the gear and vice versa. lower gears aid acceleration and pulling power from idle by increasing the torque applied to the wheels. higher gears have reduced torque but higher top end speeds. the higher the gear, the slower the engine has to run at a given speed. the lower the gear, the faster the engine has to run at the same speed. ratios like 4.10, 3.73 are good choice lower gears for the street, while ratios like 2.73 and 3.08 are factory installed higher gears to increase gas mileage by letting the motor run lower rpm's at highway speeds. some drag cars run low gears in the 5's to get a big heavy car to leave the line quicker by applying more torque to the wheels at the green light. this will slow them down some at the top end, but the object of a drag race is to get to the other end first, not necessarily be the fastest when you get there. hope that helps you understand gears better.
