I talked to the mechanic, car was lifted and he grab both front tires and shook them and said he could feel a clunk, and determined it was the rack & pinion.

Now 'That' sounds like tie rod ends to me (could be ball joints or rack)..they can be pretty sneaky! Try outers first of course.
Good luck.

ummm... yeah, don't tell someone to replace a component without giving them some sort of information please... like if you replace outters and don't get the new ones on with the exact thread count as the old you'll screw the alignment up hardcore...

Obvoiusly without hearing the noise myself and experiencing it myself I can't give you my professional opinion...

Ummm... yeah 'Krusher', I assumed the person receiving the information might be smart enough to do the job correctly, as you enlightened us with, or have it re-aligned at a professional shop.
Obviously we would all like to 'hear' the noise first, but some of us are trying to help the poor guy save a bit of dough - because we sure ain't gonna hear it ourselves! See, with all of this advise coming his way he can individually check each item he has heard here, and hopefully have a better idea of what he is getting himself into.
Anyway...good luck white, and keep us posted.
