Default Convertible problem

I have a 35th anniversary edition 1999 convertible mustang with the V6. In order for the top to go down the hand brake must be pulled. My problem is that I am pulling it but it does not show as being pulled on my instrument panel (theres a light that comes on saying brake to warn that the hand brake is on). Since the computer doesnt see the hand brake engaged it doesnt let me put the top down or up. After a few turn offs and ons with the ignition key i can usually get it to see the hand brake but i dont wanan put up with messing with it. This has been going on for two days now. Thanks for any help!

Maybe a short in the connection or the hand brake is very loosely connected?? That would be my guess

Is there any tension on the parking brake handle when you pull it all the way back. If there is little or none, you need to have the cable adjusted and/or the rear brakes adjusted. With proper tension, all should work well.

There's plenty tension on the handle.
