thinking bout getting a bike? help?
i just turned 18 and am higly instrested in the ss bikes. the yamaha r1 would be at the top of my list or the suzuki GSX-R1000. i have never bought a bike before and was wondering how many miles is too much, many poeple have told me that 20k on a bike is a lot. i was looking at the R1's at are a few years old and have about 8 to 12k on em. i have about 5000 to 7500 to spend. u guys think i could pick up a decent bike for that. and would u guys recommend anyother bikes?
There's a couple things wrong here...
This isn't a bike forum, thus, many people will not have a clue.
This is not a mustang-related topic, you would get more of a response in off topic

If you have never owned a bike you have absolutly no buisness on an R1, it is by no means a good starter bike. Get a cruiser or at most a 600 for your first bike, learn to ride and get used to it and then trade up in a year or two.

ok first off how tall are you and how much do you weigh??
I know this sounds invasive but it truly does affect which bike you choose. For a guy like me...5'9" and a buck thirty a 600 is all i need. If you 6'2" 220 an r1 or a honda 1000rr would be a better/more fun bike for you. If you are a bigger guy I would recommend finding a buddy who already has a 600 and learning to ride on it. trust me after 3 months you will be wanting to up it to a 1000.
If however you are closer to my size i know you can get a gsx r600 for 100.00/mo and insurance would run 250.00+ depending on your driving record. and as odd as it sounds if you are looking to save money on bike insurance get a new bike, used bikes require full coverage new bikes do not, at least not in texas...where you are it could be different i dont know.
another thing to consider is where you live. i personally live in houston and i would not even consider riding a bike (street bike) down the highways here solo. you have to go in groups of three or four or you will literally get run off the road.
if however the choice is between the gxsr and the r1, eh, its a matter of opinion. when it comes to bikes, at least bikes as fast as those, you will more than likely never top them out so go for the one with better low end performance. do your research, check the insurance costs, the price to mod it out, (because thats the first thing you will do when you get to be a better rider), and go with the best overall value.
hope this helps, im more well versed with 600's than 1000's (refer to size comment
