hey mel, try www.lentechautomatics.com they specialize in AOD trannies and can set you up with a rebuilt unit I'm sure, not sure on the price but it's worth it to look at them. they can also build one to withstand whatever you want to throw at it too, so give them a try. they were the first to do serious build-ups on the AOD trannys and have lots of experience with all types of them. they've built race model for cars running in the 8's, so they can definitely build you one I'm sure.
in the AOD's, 3rd and overdrive are on the same smaller shaft that runs inside the main shaft and is splined into the torque converter for the lock-up function in 3rd & OD. this is the main weak link in the AOD cause the smaller diameter shaft breaks easier. you can get a solid input shaft to remedy this problem but you lose the advantage of lock-up in 3rd and OD, but it's probably worth it since you have broken one already.
sure hope this helps you out!
looked them up myself, they have a street terminator AODE for $1695 and street terminator AOD for $1295, converters start at $395. they also offer a limited lifetime warranty!

Try this address for Ford Tranny Talk: http://www.network54.com/Forum/260730 It is a discussion forum, and somebody might be able to steer you to a vendor.
