When me and my dad checked we followed Comp Cam's directions and they said use clay form it and then put oil on it. So I would say go with the clay method because we got it right the first time.

NOS/MAN, see if this helps you out-from National Dragster March 26, 2004. It's the best explantion of and precise measurement of checking piston to valve clearance I've ever read!

ill try it out thanks heres sowhen using the light spring i can hold down on the valve yill a feel it touch the piston makes the light spring go up then back down i get it to the mid point,,on check it ,,by measuring the distance between the retainers edge..im getting 2 diff readings dont know why.....i always checked the clay way ,,before,,,is that to close????also checking on my old 351w not my 408 its still in the shop..i know it wont be the same buy hoping it will be more ,,,but i thinks its going to be less because the piston will be moving faster ,,right????my piston on both motors are .010 in the hole..checking with old gasket .042 thick..with soild roller with .025 valve lash..both ways i checking over 10 times each ,,and iam going crazy not getting the same readings,,,,i know i will have to check on mt 408 ,,should i just bring the heads to the shop ,,and get them to check it also ,,they are degreeing my cam in anyway,,also my spring compressor cant compress these new springs....225 seat pressure,,,thanks for any more advice...dont want no problems with this motor..or my wife will hit me with a skillit.... .

take the mouse off the picture for a second after it goes small
then place the mouse back on it

a little box should pop up in the bottom right with arrows on it
click that and itll stay big
