Default ****ed up Miles to empty

so the other day i was driving in my mustang...it's a 2006 gt...
I had just filled the tank that morning to about 1/2 way.

It was midafternoon, and I was driving with 100 miles to empty showing on the display under the speedometer, It moves to 99 as it normally does, and after about another mile of driving, instead of moving to 98, it jumps to 12.

I figure, push reset, restart the car, nothing helps. the display continues to move down at the standard rate, 11, 10, and instead of going to 9, it goes all the way to 68.

it then gradually goes down once again, and then jumps to 84, before i refilled the tank to see what good that would do.

I noticed the needle on the fuel guage moving with the display...

any suggestions?

Yep,this is a warranty job, don't fool with it.
To make things as easy as possible, try to figure out how to make the problem reproduce itself. An intermittent problem is a major PITA to figure out.
