5.4's got me stumped?
Ok, I was at a car show and they had crate engines on show. I came up and there was a 5.0 and was like "thats pretty". Well, I saw the next one which was a 5.8 and was like "awwww"....so, from a distance I see something MASSIVE but it only said Modular. My dad said it was a 5.4??
Apparently, the displacement is the same but the block itself is bigger. My main question is how do these perduce more power without more displacement, just by being bigger?

what are you confused about? why ohc motors are gigantic and ohv motors are not? it's all in the packaging. You can put the valvetrain in the middle of the V on a OHV motor, but an OHC motor needs all that stuff ouside of the V.
as for making power, ohc motors tend to be more rev-happy, so they can make more HP for their size (or at least non-ford ones do). they have less rotating mass in the valvetrain and therefore less rotating friction and all the other stuff that goes along. that said, I think pushrod motors are the way to go for performance, they get large displacement with a smaller package, I don't really know why OHC motors are so popular, I think they are easier to engineer cause there are less moving parts.

the engine out of my dads f150 is dieing and he may replace it soon...it has a 331 and i said maybe up it alittle and he called me retarded because 331 was the "biggest engine" and i said what about 351 and he said that the 331 was way more powerful than the 351....
