3.73 gear question
im about to order some gears. i want 3.73's. where is the best place to buy, and what all do i need to buy? im on a budget and with labor cost so high, i would like to spend no more than $150 on the gears themselves. will the shop include fluids, and gaskets in their labor cost, or do i need to buy everything?
no good if your on a budget and having a shop install. I purchased my frpp from parkway ford (ebay) for 156. Install cost like 250 or so, plus shop materials, fluids etc. Also, you would be a fool not to purchase the rebuild kit from mustangtuning.com (bushing/bearing kit) if your going through all the work. Save a little more and get it done right.
Nothing is for free. You will have to buy a complete install kit with shims, bearings, etc. as well as all fluids. Otherwise the installer can provide these but at steep, retail prices. You will also need to invest in the proper speedometer gear for your ratio rearend in order to compensate for speedo error (reading higher than you are really going). By the way, do yourself a favor and please buy Ford Racing gears. Everyone tries to emulate the Ford gears as they are pretty much the industry standard for strength and durablitiy. The following link will show you pretty much what you need in the way of parts. They are not the cheapest out there but all items are pictured on the same page which makes it convenient to study:

This supplier has a little bit better price on gears. The 3.73's are the first sets to be processed with the new manufacturing technique for even stronger gears and better hauling power:

Good luck with your rearend project and enjoy your ride!
