Default drag car

I have an 86 mustang with a 4 banger in it.

i was wonder what you guys think is the best way to go to turn this into a 1/4 mile car. What engine? 302? 351 stoker? 460???

whats the best one to get a 10 second time?

I plan to build whatever it is bullet proof with after market crank, rods, forged pistons, the works.

Theres not alot of good comparisons for dollars to hp on the net?

Your comments would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have an 01 Cobra, I just dont want to beat the crap out of it!!!!

You need to consider some things heere.....
1) What size is the budget?
2) What are your skills? Can you do most of it yourself or will it be a 'VISA' car?
3) What sort of time frame?
4) What sort of a place do you have to work on it in?
I would stay away from the big block idea. I'd be tempted to use a big 351W for cost effectiveness. Something like 393 or 408. You'll need a good C-4 and of course an 8.8" rear axle. If you are planning on 10's then you need a mininum of a 6 point rollbar and frame ties.......

thanks for the reply.

i do most of my own stuff except of course hot tank, machining, and some parts of the head work. I used to be a mopar guy, so I've never done a ford motor before. I have done a little reading on the 351, but I better go out and get a book on it.

Do you have to use an older 351? i saw there is some notches that need to be done in the block, is that something that can be done in the garage? Could I just pick up and older F150 for the engine?

i am a buyer for an auto parts chain. We dont get into HP too much, but I have some really good connections and can buy anything at wholesale price.

I agree with Tinman a 351 based engine is going to be the easiest, cheapest way. Also it will allow you to build up to your eventual goal, it's never a good idea to just jump into a 10 second car.

Rat; you are not the only one here who used to be a 'MOPAR' guy.
I raced them for nearly 30 years in stock, super stock as well as brackets......
Still think the 351W is the way to go if you are starting from '0'....
I use a 306 on account I bought a turnkey racer.....
