New engine to replace a 6?

New engine to replace a 6?
Finally got my hands on a Mustang, which was my dream car since before I can remember.
Unfortunatly due to insurance and pricing, I had to get the 6 rather than the GT
My friend finally pulled me into the world of performance cars, and I'll admit I'm pretty new. I've got his Sunfire (lol) beat, but my other friend has a moded out GTI 'wagon that still beats my (mostly) stock mustang.
All I know is that I want to swap my current 3.8 v6 out for somthing bigger and more powerful before I start to mod it out.
After doing a bit of research, it seems like a 5.0 or a 4.6 would be my best options
All thats left is determining the best year, and I cant seem to find any sites comparing the power from year to year of the engines.
Anyone know the best years/makes as far as v8 engines go that can be placed into the 2000 mustang? And any sites that have the engine up for purchase?
Current car specs:
3.8L v6
2000 Ford Mustang
5-speed manual trans

RE: New engine to replace a 6?
I've been looking at the 2000 V8 Mustang GT engine listed here...
http://www.powerpro2000.com/lb_ford.htm
Just scroll down until you find the V8 listings and its there, I'll copy it here for easier reading
eng. size Cyl year vin
281/4.6 V8 00 X Mustang Engine, P.I. Heads, Windsor Plant, 16 Valve. 8 Bolt Flywheel. Block # F75E, Head# XL3E-C20D. temp sensor under #5 intake port DFCF $2,875 $450
wondering if thats a good engine, and one that could be easily placed in a 2000 mustang after the current 6 is taken out.
