Brake rubbing, thump when tapped.
Well..I just spent like 20 minutes searching (damn dialup) and couldn't find anything, but here's my problem. It just started the other day, coming from my girlfriend's house. It sounds like a brake is rubbing...but if I drive for like..lets say..half a mile without hitting the brakes, then tap them, it makes a hard thumping noise..almost sounds and feels like someone kicking the hell out of the side of the car. It does the rubbing thing worse when i'm in reverse, and pretty much that wheel will lock up for a second sometimes when i'm going in reverse. I'm not driving the car (just around the house to the garage) until I find out what it is and fix it to keep from possibly making things worse. It's on the passenger side, front.
is front or rear if its the rear the shoes could be have come apart if its the front the rotors could need to be turned or could have lost upper caliber bolt thats why it does it worse backing up.
It's front. I tried to take the wheel off yesterday and check it out, but broke three damn ratchet's in the process...the way the wheels are made, you have to use a socket...a lug wrench won't fit back into the holes. But I need an impact socket and a breaker bar. I just don't have the money at the moment to buy one (poor entering-college student)..I may run down to my brother's tonight and use his.
Well, i doubt this info will help you much, but my tempo had kinda the same problem. The front passenger side wheel would seize up and not want to turn after not being driven for a day or two. I had to attempt a burnout in order to loosen it up, lol. When i took it to the shop, they said something about the front damper, or whatever. It wound up costing $200 to fix.
