Default Loud single *Clank* noise when accelerating.

Hi all, and thanks in advance for any replies/advice.

I have a 2000 Mustang GT, 5 speed.

When I accelerate from a stop a very loud *clank* noise can be heard once, then again while accelerating after shifting into second, and sometimes into third. I can avoid the noise by accelerating extremely softly.

Any ideas on what this could possibly be?

Thanks!
James

Is it during or after shifting?

After, it doesn't do it until I step on the gas pedal after shifting.

Maybe even a motor mount also...

I'm not sure if this will help in narrowing it down any; but if I let off on the gas all the way and then step on it it will make the sound again.

as mentioned above... tranny mount or u-joint. Where is the sound coming from? Under the car or in front of it? Directly under you or towards the back?

I'm pretty sure it's coming from under me and not from the engine - I'm not positive if it is directly under me or towards the back.

Is there anything visual I can look for under the car to check for the above problems, or should I take it to a shop and have them look?

Also, I do have a Mechanical Breakdown Protection Plan, is it possible this may be covered? All the sections say "If damaged by the failure of an internally lubricated part" so I'm inclined to think probably not, but one can hope.

Best bet is to just lift the car up a little and do a quick run-through of your bolts. Last week i took mine into the shop to investigate a rumble at deceleration, and found that i had 2 U-joint bolts missing, completely. It's the little things that kill you.
