Default 3rd gear

yea, my 3rd gear keeps grinding, when i'm getting off the on ramp to the interstate, racing, anything that involves shifting fast it sometimes goofs up and grinds. what's causing this? i have the clutch in like normal and everything's how it should be but it does it. not all the time but it does, does this sound like a problem or do i just need practice bc i speed shift alot and normally it works fine but sometimes it messes up.

because these tranny's dont like to be speed shifted at all. That happens to all of us. Get a short throw and it will minumize that problem.

Your tranny is on it's way out. I blew up my 2 nd stock t-5 tranny. I just bought a TKO-500 Tremec Handles 500lbs of Torque. 3 rd gears take a beating.

a shifter would help prevent mis-shifts. What you hear are the sychronizers grinding. Their job is to help the transmission speed match the engine speed. The easiest way to send them to the crapper is to miss shifts. The syncro's themselves are inexpensive, but the labor on pulling the tranny and cracking the case isnt. Maybe your just mis-shifting, maybe your not and you have syncro problems. If its the syncros then you will soon know it, as its gonna get worse each shift you grind - and your gonna have to start shifing slower and slower and at lower rpm's to keep it from grinding.

As far as putting in a TKO, the stock 3650 is rated at 375 lbs of torque (a T5 in a 5.0 is much less). A TKO is rated at 425 lbs, not a HUGE difference in itself. The big daddy TKO2 is somewhere around 475 lbs I believe. Your problem isn't that your tranny can't handle your power, its because you are mis-shifting. Besides, I wouldn't swap out the tranny anyways for just 50 lbs more handling, unless I actually BROKE something.

Try a short throw shifter, sometimes the trusy ol forks get bent and cause some grindage.

If not, it's time to replace!!!!!!

thanks guys, i'll get a short throw. tonight i speed shifted into second and it's just straight down so it's kind of hard to mis-shift. so hopefully nothing is hurt. thanks again guys. - dustin

I payed $1548.00 For Tremec -500 There brand new. They handle 500 lbs of torque. They replaced the weaker Tremec 3550.

3rd gear is a bitch, i used to miss it when i first got my car and grind it, but now i'm fine, EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, I get a problem, as soon as I can I am upgrading, I suggest the same to you, missing third while racing can cost you money
