The reason it happens is either: 1) You have aftermarket cam/s which push the valves in further, thus hitting the pistons, or 2) timing chain has slipped or cam timing is off, thus valves going in sooner/later then they need to and hitting the pistons. Solutions are get dished pistons, or see if cam/s and crank are lined up right. Hope this helps. Also, it would be a good idea to check the condition of the valves and pistons if this has happened.

I think you're referring to the soft tapping sound when the rocker arms are too loose, or the mechanical music a solid lifter cam makes. The fix is to properly lash the rockers/lifters for hydraulic cams, and to properly set the lash for a solid lifter, keeping in mind you'll always here the tap with the solids. If you can't get the tapping out of a hydraulic, you may have a bad lifter, or one that isn't designed for an aggressive cam.

82k, daily driver. i drive my car for work and everything. the noise is very bad when the engine first starts out. and then it lowers but you can defenetly hear it if you pay attention even after the car gets warmed up and the oil is pumping and its sitting idle..

Sounds like the aforementioned lifter problem

yup... you may want to try running a thicker grade of oil for the time being or a bottle of oil treatment.

My car has bad valve guide seals, and I run 5w30(soon to be 10w30) valvoline max life oil. I added a bottle of the max life oil additive, and it seems to have decreased the engine smoke by about 50%.
