Default Cam selection

I'm sure everyone has a different opinion, but let's hear them. I'm building a new motor. I will be running a supercharger 5-8 pounds of boost. I bought a short block as the base for my motor. The guy that built the short block told me that I shouldn't go much larger than .520 lift on the intake and a little larger on the exhaust. Any suggestion on the best cam to go with?

The lift has more to do with how well your heads flow and how reliable of a valvetrain setup you want than anything else, not really has anything to do with what your method of power is gonna be. On stock heads you don't need to go any larger than that because it won't increase flow. Since your going supercharged your gonna want a cam with a fairly high LDA, somehting like 113-114 ish and duration to match whatever powerband you'r gonna be running - with reduced intake dur and increase exhaust dur (split cam). If we knew more about your setup (heads, intake, compression, etc.) it would be easier to make a recommendation - you could also cam a cam manufacturer and they will give you a good recommendation as well.

What does LDA stand for?

I'm not 100% sure on the heads I will be using yet, but I'm leaning toward the world products windsor sr. lite heads, mainly because of the 64cc combustion chambers. I need to get a low compression ratio.

I also want my power to be in a streetable power range. An insanely huge amount of HP at 7000 rpm is useless except at the track. I had tried getting info from crane cams, but the insist because the car is an 83 that I won't be using roller camshafts. The whole I'm building a new moter didn't seem to register with them.

well with that low amount of boost and if your using flat top pistons then the afr's 185 is good I use the crane 565 cam..on mine and I run 15 psi using gt-40 heads and flat top pistions..I'm at the limit with 15 psi and my compression..but my heads are o-rings the only way I would run boost I'm in the 550 + hp area...

I'm running dished pistons. 8.76:1 w/60cc combustion chambers. With 6 lbs of boost that is an effective compression ratio of around 12.1:1. Don't the the AFR heads have 58cc combustion chambers.

I should have mentioned That I'll be running a roots type blower, which is alot harder on the motor than a centrifical blower.

So far that is the cam that I've been leaning toward. Weiand, who makes the blower recomends a particular lunatti cam. Of course Lunatti and weiland ar bothe owned by holley. I looked at the specs for the lunatti cam and it is almost the same as the f303 cam. The f303 actually seemed a little better because it has a slightly longer duration on the exhaust side, which is where the bottleneck usually is on a blown engine. Also the f303 is about 50 bucks cheaper.

By the way what blower are you running on your 87 gt?
