Default Shifter removal

Okay, so I was changing out the shifter in my '99 Cobra tonight knowing that it would only take like 30-45 minutes. I got all the bolts out and the silicone adhesive apparantly has a death grip on the shifter and it won't budge. I have tried putting the handle back on and knocking the shifter in all directions but it still won't move a millimeter. I am planning on seeing if I can get under the car tommorrow and trying to tap on the outer edge of the plate to tap it loose. Just wondering how others have solved this issue. Thanks for the help.
