My auto shift lever went completely
limp yesterday. At least I went out in
neutral.
A tow to the garage and today I learn
the cable is shot.

You can most likely get the part from a transmission warehouse, look for Dacco Detroit or ATC, they are the two largest and and have multiple locations.

Dacco - 1-800-44DACCO call for a location near you.

ATC - ???

Personally, I would just go to a junkyard and take one from there. They are amazingly easy to remove and install yourself. There's only one thing that could be problematic when you install it... When installing it, make sure both the transmission AND the shifter are in the same gear (preferably neutral.) Then just pull the slack on the cable and tighten everything up.
