Stall converter, shift kit, programmer(?), stronger clutches.

little does most know, an auto can be a much more capible beast then a manual can be with the right mods

like colorado said, get a stall, shift kit, tune, and through some gears and sticky tires on it
and the auto will run circles around a lightly modifided or stock manual car

Your 4R70W has a lot of potential. A shift kit will really give it firm quick shifts, a little better than a tuner cam do but oit may not be worth the expense. A 3K rpm stall converter would really help the launch IF you have slicks or drag radials. I have a '99 with an automatic and I need to launch it on the street anyways by just punching it. If I try to power launch it at all, even launching at 1000rpm's it will break the tires( I have 315/35's in the back!) loose so hard that the motor will rev to it's 6200rpm shift point and then the rpm's drop way low in second. I would love to launch it hard with tires and a higher stall. I am quite sure I could get a 13.75 at 105mph.
If you do beyond A TUNER upgrade then I would get a shift kit and have them add as many extra clutches as possible for this tranny and get a converter or they could loosen up the stock one a few hundred rpm's. I don't think an extra 400rpm's would be enough though. Be sure to changfe the fluid and oil and be sure to use Mercon "V". Make sure it the V version. These trannies do sopmetines get a bad vibration because people do not change the oil and the new Mercon is what Ford recommends now. Heat is what kills auto's so an extra external oil cooler would be a good investment and still have the fluid pass through the radiator like it does stock. With a set of 4.10's and the tranny work if the car hooked well you will drop a good .5 from your 1/4 mile time possibly more as I thnk the tranny work alone would yield the .5 improvement. Thanks for reading this short story! Mark
PS: Don't forget a new filter, a good one! Also I am running a tuner right now from www.brenspeed.com and Brent set's up each with 3 custom tunes for any 3 octane levels you want. I have one for 87 octane and another for 93 and a race tune that I use 100 unleaded octane for racing times.

Auto's are ok.............i guess. In addition to what everyone else suggested, you can get a manuall valve body for it as well. Personally, I hate auto (except for drag racin), on teh street theyre ALWAYS in the wrong gear, and it seems the way theyre setup they want you in the highest gear possible, so you wind up luggin the motor a lot, which is REALLY bad,IMO. I suggest you tear out that hunk o junk and get a T-56 6spd .

remedies....

1) Rear Diff Gears... 3.73's are best if you will drive the highway
2) Stall Convertor... 3000rpm or else your wasting time and money
3) Lentech Manual Valve body... www.lentechautomatics.com
4) Tranny Flush and Fill every 30k for longevity... Motorcraft ATF
5) Tires... get a sticky tire, depends on your application, for the track BFG DR's are best imo

Good Luck, and an AOD isn't as bad as some think...

Thanks for all the good advice for an auto....even the idea of loosing that AOD for a 6 speed lol, I would like that but right now I can't exactly afford that. As of right now the car has 3.73 gears and exhaust on it thats the extent of the "mods' if I don't sell it I will def. look in to hooking up right.
