Default difference between regular clutch and perf.

so, i need a new clutch now, and i was wonderign what the differences between clutches are. i have seen stage 1's, 2's, and 3's, but i dont know what it all means. what are the benefits from a stock clutch. are clutches easy to install? would i need to pull engine off to get to the tranny, then to the clutch? thanks for any help you give me. erich

What kinda car do you have?

Performace clutches have higher spring pressure to grab the clutch harder so it doesn't slip as much. It also usually gives a heavier pedal for you to push too [:@] if your engine is stock then stick with a stock clutch unless you enjoy pushing on a really hard pedal

i have a 1999 V6 stang with a manual tranny. my clutch pedal is really high. its further up than the other pedals, and its hard to push in. by high i mean that it is like close to the seat, than i would like. i wish i could "heal-toe" shift like my old car. (geo metro 1994) lol! but yeah, how much would a stage 2 or 3 cost compared to a regular one, and how much do they run? thanks, erich

Like GreyStang said, the more you move away from the stock style clutch, the harder it will be to push the clutch. If you have a sixer, I wouldn't mess w/ anything more than a stage 1. It will handle all you can throw at it. I'm running a Ram HD on my modded 5.0 and it holds just fine and was only $159, so don't get caught up in spending extra cash on a performance clutch.

alright, thanks, ill prolly go for a stock then. ive been told that the problem i have is a "throw-out" bearing. and i should just replace the whole tranny. if thats necessary, my car will be sitting for a year.

Most of your good clutch kits will come with the throwout bearing. If the shop told you that you needed a new tranny b/c of that, go back up there kick his *** and tell him to go back to doing oil changes b/c thats all they are apparently good for. They are just trying to stroke you for some money. A stock clutch should do you fine, but if you are looking for a better feel and a little better grab, then go with the stage one, that should hold you for quite some time.

lol, well, ill have to pay him a visit for sure then. i was wondering, how difficult is it to do a "clutch swap" to put a new one in? and why is my clutch pedal right now, so hard to push down? its a stock clutch im sure. thanks

Swapping a clutch isn't brain surgery, but you do have to drop the tranny & need quite a few tools & if possible a car hoist. It shoudn't be one of the first repair jobs you've tried to do so. Not sure why your pedal is "high" now but, if it's very hard to push then the throwout bearing arm might be damaged?
